From Lyft Driver to Global Impact: How One Immigrant’s Vision is Transforming Lives Through Destiny Hands International

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — What began as a personal commitment to service has grown into a mission impacting communities across the United States, Mexico, and Liberia. Founded in July 2021, Destiny Hands International Inc., a San Diego-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is helping create opportunities for youth, students, and communities in need—one act of service at a time.

The organization was founded by Benjamin Kettor, an immigrant from Liberia, Rotarian, professional data analyst, and Lyft driver whose life journey reflects resilience, compassion, and a dedication to helping others.

Known simply as “Ben” by passengers and friends, Kettor serves as a member and executive within the Rotary E-Club of San Diego. Following the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions in 2021, he began driving for Lyft as a way to reconnect with people after a season marked by uncertainty and isolation.

During weekdays, Kettor works full-time as a professional data analyst, helping support youth who are at risk of homelessness and facing mental health challenges. On weekends, guided by Rotary’s spirit of “Service Above Self,” he drives Lyft—not only to serve his community but also to help financially support the nonprofit organization he founded.

Destiny Hands International envisions a world where individuals have opportunities to reach their fullest potential while contributing to stronger communities and helping others succeed.

Since its establishment, the organization has partnered with community organizations, donors, and volunteers to create impact across multiple regions.

Among its initiatives, Destiny Hands International has provided backpacks filled with school supplies to underserved youth in San Diego, California; Tijuana, Mexico; and Liberia, West Africa—helping students begin school equipped and encouraged.

The organization is also expanding educational opportunities through technology initiatives that provide computer labs and digital library systems to schools in Liberia, particularly in underserved and remote communities where access to digital learning remains limited.

Additional efforts include distributing solar-powered study lights to students who lack reliable electricity, helping create opportunities for learning after dark. Destiny Hands also supports faith leaders through Pastor Appreciation and Training programs, designed to encourage and equip pastors and church workers faithfully serving their communities.

What makes the organization’s story especially unique is how support often comes from unexpected places.

Tips received during Lyft rides, alongside generous contributions from passengers, donors, and community partners, are helping fund programs that are creating meaningful change across borders.

“Every contribution matters,” supporters say. “Small acts of kindness can create ripple effects that transform lives,” Ben agreed.

As Destiny Hands International continues expanding its reach, leaders are inviting individuals, organizations, and communities to become part of the mission.

Together, they believe it is possible to build stronger communities, empower future generations, and create lasting impact—not only locally, but around the world.
